Obituary of Marcelina Flores
Marcelina Loza Flores was born in Agujita, Coahuila, Mexico, on June 4, 1931, to Jose de Jesus Loza and Maria Ignacia Martinez. Born into a family of educators, Marcelina graduated from the Escuela Normal de la Laguna (Torreon) in 1959 with a degree in primary education, a profession that combined her love of children and learning. In 1963, a new chapter began when she moved to Houston, Texas, after falling in love with Alfonso (Al) Flores, her husband of 52 years. She was the proud mother of three children (Miriam, James and Al, Jr.) and was happy as the family expanded to include a son-in-law Robert, daughter-in-law Rosa, and grandchildren (Christopher and Edward).
Marcelina was very active and pursued many interests. She was well known for her green thumb and could often be found in her garden among the fruit trees and flowers she lovingly cultivated, with roses being her specialty. She also loved to paint and draw and would spend her time drawing the dogs, flowers and landscapes that filled her life.
Marcelina and Al had a great love of dogs throughout their marriage. Her favorites were Cocker Spaniels, Dobermans and a terrier mix adopted from the Humane Society.
She is predeceased by her husband, her parents, and two brothers, Jose Pedro and Mario. She is survived by her beloved sister, Dolores Johnson, John Martinez (cousin) and many other Martinez and Loza relatives.
Marcelina passed away on January 20, 2023, at Belmont Village Senior Living West University. The family is grateful for the care she received from Dr. Thomas Lux (Medical Clinic of Houston) and the “pretty ladies” at Belmont Village.
A Funeral Mass is planned at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church 6800 Buffalo Speedway Houston, TX 77025 on Friday February 3, 2023. Visitation starts at 9:30 am and the eulogy will be delivered at 9:45 am followed by the Funeral Mass.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Houston Humane Society.
