Please share a memory of Edgar to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Edgar Dial Fondren, age 90, of Alvin, passed away peacefully Friday March 22, 2019.  Edgar was born March 4, 1929 in Houston, Texas to Edgar M and Ella Fondren.  As a young boy Edgar, “Blackie”, as he was known to all who knew and loved him, lost his father and spent his summers with his Grandmother in Smithville, Tx where he derived many cherished memories.  He attended Reagan High School and graduated in 1947.  Blackie shined shoes in Downtown Houston in front of the Lowes Theater where he later worked.  He also did all sorts of odd jobs.  He was determined and saved his earnings then purchasing a new black Ford which he and a friend drove all the way to Acapulco.  Upon returning to Houston he put his head down and went to work for W.H. Curtain & Co in 1948 as a warehouseman.  After some years of service he was promoted to the Instrument Department and later as a Senior Engineering Technician.  In 1975 he transferred to the Marketing Department as a Technical Writer and retired in 1992 with 45 years of service.

Blackie wed his beloved wife Sallye on December 6, 1952.  Together they began a 67 year partnership of faith and family, having two sons, Michael and Matthew.  Blackie was strong in his faith and a founding member of First Presbyterian Church of Pearland where he served faithfully as an Elder Deacon.  Blackie and Sallye loved to travel and together they travelled the world.  Blackie also loved books and sat on the Library Board in Pearland.  Blackie also proudly served his country in the Naval Reserve for many years.

Left to cherish his memory are sons Michael Fondren and wife Kelly of Alvin, Matthew Fondren and spouse Clint of Galveston; grandchildren Christina and husband Ryan Williams, Emily Fondren and Dylan Cox; great-grandchildren:  Noah, Elisha, Jude, James, Benjamin and Asher; several nieces and nephews and a host of other dear friends.  Blackie was preceded in death by his wife Sallye and his parents.

The family would also like to extend a very special thank you to Harbor Hospice for the exceptional love and care that they gave during the last year of his life.
